Carl Emerson Travis, a 52-year-old resident of Sterling Heights, Michigan, has pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assaults on federal officers. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., with Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, also present.
Court documents reveal that the incident occurred on March 29, 2024. Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Team attempted to arrest Travis, who was wanted across multiple jurisdictions. During the arrest attempt, Travis resisted and tried to flee using a moving car, posing a threat to the officers nearby. In his attempt to escape, he reversed his car rapidly, dragging two officers and nearly hitting another. The situation ended when Travis collided with a parked vehicle, which then crashed through the wall of an occupied hotel room.
The injured officers were part of this confrontation with Travis. Sentencing for Travis is set for October 15, 2025. If convicted of assaulting a federal officer, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with support from Michigan State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nhan Ho and Eaton Brown are handling the prosecution for this case.
