Turan West, a 30-year-old resident of Saginaw, has been sentenced to 162 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr., with James Deir, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), also participating.
U.S. District Court Judge Thomas L. Ludington issued the sentence after West pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, the incident occurred in August 2024 when Michigan State Police Troopers stopped a vehicle in Saginaw with West seated as the passenger. When troopers asked the driver to exit, West moved into the driver’s seat and attempted to flee while officers tried to intervene. He crashed the car into an ambulance that had stopped to assist at the scene. Inside the vehicle, police found a handgun; West was prohibited from possessing firearms due to multiple prior felony convictions.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms conducted the investigation after it was adopted from Michigan State Police. Assistant United States Attorney William Orr prosecuted the case.
“This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, after being adopted from the Michigan State Police,” according to officials involved in prosecuting this case.
