Brandon White, acting as the guardian for his deceased sister Miranda White, has filed a significant lawsuit against Pathlight Community Services, formerly known as Renaissance Northland. The complaint was lodged on November 25, 2025, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The lawsuit accuses Pathlight Community Services and several of its employees of severe neglect and abuse that allegedly led to Miranda White’s untimely death.

The lawsuit paints a harrowing picture of Miranda White’s final days under the care of Pathlight Community Services. According to the complaint, Miranda White was a vulnerable adult suffering from Rett Syndrome, a condition that rendered her non-verbal and dependent on full-time care. The plaintiffs allege that despite being aware of her condition, the facility’s staff repeatedly failed to provide adequate care. On November 23, 2023, two direct care workers employed by Pathlight—Susan Todd and Amy Howes—allegedly used excessive force while changing Ms. White’s adult diaper, resulting in a broken arm. This incident is said to have been part of a broader pattern of neglect and discrimination against Ms. White due to her disabilities.

The complaint further details how this initial injury spiraled into more severe health complications due to inadequate medical attention from the facility’s staff. The untreated fracture led to an infection that developed into sepsis, causing permanent heart damage and ultimately contributing to Ms. White’s premature death later in 2024. Brandon White argues that these events were not isolated incidents but indicative of systemic failures at Pathlight Community Services.

The legal action cites multiple violations including breaches under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Federal Nursing Home Reform Act, Michigan Mental Health Code, and other state laws protecting vulnerable adults from abuse and neglect. Brandon White seeks justice for his sister through compensatory damages exceeding $75,001 per count for economic losses such as medical expenses and funeral costs, alongside non-economic damages for emotional distress experienced by both Miranda before her death and her surviving family members.

The case is being handled by attorney Kati L. Komorosky from Komorosky Law PLLC based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It has been assigned Case No.: 2:25-cv-13771-SJM-APP under Judge Stephen J Murphy III with Andrew Paterson presiding over proceedings.
