Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes addressed challenges to free speech in the latest episode of their podcast, Pantsuits and Lawsuits. The discussion focused on recent pressures against the First Amendment, including intimidation, lawsuits, and threats to funding that are impacting how Americans communicate and access information.

Veteran reporter Mary Jo Pitzl joined the episode to talk about how economic factors in newsrooms, algorithm-driven incentives, and headline strategies can influence news coverage. She explained that these forces may lead editors to make safer choices and could result in more confusion among audiences.

Nessel and Mayes discussed various examples of restrictions on free speech, such as protest crackdowns and new policies at the Pentagon. They described how media organizations, universities, law firms, and nonprofits are dealing with attacks on the First Amendment from actions taken by the Trump Administration. The attorneys general suggested several ways to respond to these challenges. These include collective action among schools and legal firms to share legal risks, providing stronger support for local journalism and public broadcasting, and focusing on thorough reporting instead of viral content.

“When our institutions are pressured into silence, our democracy becomes weaker,” Nessel said. “I am glad Mary Jo was able to come on the podcast to discuss how the realities of shrinking newsrooms and interference from government officials shape the information that we all rely on. Whether in the media, in law offices, or in our communities, it’s essential that we stand together to protect the places where truth and ideas can be reported, debated, and defended.”

Pantsuits and Lawsuits releases new episodes every two weeks. The podcast aims to explain complex legal issues in a way that is accessible for listeners. Nessel and Mayes use their experience as attorneys general to analyze legal cases, discuss policy debates at both state and national levels, and explain how attorneys general serve their communities.

The latest episode is now available on major podcast platforms.
