A Monroe, Michigan resident, John Charles Robinson, has been arrested for allegedly calling in a hoax bomb threat to Spirit Airlines regarding a flight departing from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr., alongside Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson of the FBI’s Detroit Division.

According to an affidavit, on June 5, 2025, Robinson used a cellphone to call Spirit Airlines and falsely reported a bomb threat concerning Flight 2145 bound for Los Angeles. During the call, he claimed that someone would attempt to blow up the airport and carry a bomb through TSA undetected. As a result of the threat, the flight was canceled and passengers were deplaned while authorities conducted a search with bomb-sniffing dogs. No explosives were found.

Robinson had missed his original booking on Flight 2145 and was informed at the gate that he needed to rebook. He was arrested by FBI agents when he returned to the airport intending to board another flight to Los Angeles.

U.S. Attorney Gorgon stated: “No American wants to hear the words ‘bomb’ and ‘airplane’ in the same sentence. Making this kind of threat undermines our collective sense of security and wastes valuable law enforcement resources.”

Special Agent Cheyvoryea Gibson emphasized: “Anyone who threatens to bomb an aircraft and endanger public safety will be swiftly investigated and brought to justice.” He noted that Robinson’s alleged actions prompted a coordinated response involving multiple agencies leading to his arrest.

Robinson appeared in federal court in Detroit where he was released on bond pending his next court appearance scheduled for June 27 for a preliminary examination.

The charges against Robinson are currently allegations; he remains innocent until proven guilty in court. The case is being handled by special agents from the FBI with prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Hank Moon and Douglas Salzenstein.
