The Michigan Bar Association announced on Apr. 27 a series of events throughout the state to mark Law Day, which is celebrated annually on May 1.
Law Day highlights the importance of the Rule of Law and encourages public participation in understanding and upholding legal principles. This year’s celebrations are notable as they coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Lisa J. Hamameh, president of the State Bar of Michigan, said, “From our nation’s infancy, our country has embraced the Rule of Law. Then and now, our freedoms and our democracy require the Rule of Law’s fundamental principles of equality, fairness and justice. Law Day is a perfect way to celebrate our judicial system, remember our Lawyer’s Oath, and recognize our own individual and collective responsibility to stand for the Rule of Law.”
Events will take place in Ann Arbor with an annual meeting featuring Hon. Daniel Korobkin; Detroit will host lawyers and judges reaffirming their oath at Coleman A. Young Municipal Center; Flint will include student contests and mock trials; Grand Rapids offers courtroom experiences for students; Kalamazoo hosts a lunch with Supreme Court Justice Noah P. Hood as keynote speaker; Pontiac holds a ceremony honoring judges with memorial plaques; Tuscola County organizes school outreach initiatives focused on civic education.
The Michigan Bar Association also plans to share videos about the importance of Rule of Law on its social media channels during this period. Educational resources related to Law Day are available through its Civic & Law Related Education page.
