In a landmark civil rights case, Michael Griffin has filed a lawsuit against the City of Flint, Genesee County, and several officials and medical professionals following his wrongful conviction for the death of his daughter. Griffin was convicted in 2010 based on what he claims was fabricated evidence and coerced confessions. His daughter, Naviah, died in 2009 after falling from a swing and undergoing a failed surgical procedure. The lawsuit alleges that police officers, doctors at Hurley Medical Center, and forensic officials conspired to present her death as a homicide rather than an accident. Griffin spent 14 years in prison before being exonerated in 2023 with the help of the Michigan Innocence Clinic and Mike Morse Law Firm. The suit seeks to hold those responsible accountable for violating Griffin’s constitutional rights under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and Michigan common law.
