Tavaris Jackson, 35, of Escanaba, was sentenced on May 1 to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the murder of Harley Corwin, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced. Jackson was convicted by a Delta County jury in March on charges including First-Degree Murder, Assault of a Pregnant Individual Intentionally Causing Miscarriage or Stillbirth, and Felony Firearm.

Jackson killed Corwin on July 3, 2023. At the time of her death, Corwin was pregnant. Her remains were found five days later in a field located in Ford River Township.

Attorney General Nessel said, “This was a senseless and brutal crime that took the life of Harley and her unborn child. While no sentence will be enough to erase the pain that her loved ones carry, I hope knowing that the person responsible will never again walk free will bring them a measure of peace.”

The case was initially charged by the Delta County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office before being assigned to the Department of Attorney General for prosecution in August 2023.

The sentencing brings closure to a case that has deeply affected both Corwin’s family and the local community.
