Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has renewed her warning to consumers after a cybersecurity breach at 700Credit LLC affected nearly 6 million people across the United States, including over 160,000 in Michigan. The company, which is based in Michigan and provides credit-related services to auto dealerships, discovered on October 25 that personal data collected from dealers between May and October 2025 had been compromised. Information exposed includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth. Impacted individuals will begin receiving notification letters from 700Credit starting the week of December 15.

“If you get a letter from 700Credit, don’t ignore it,” Nessel said. “It is important that anyone affected by this data breach takes steps as soon as possible to protect their information. A credit freeze or monitoring services can go a long way in preventing fraud, and I encourage Michiganders to use the tools available to keep their identity safe.”

The Attorney General’s office advises consumers to remain alert for phishing emails, update passwords, avoid keeping unnecessary files or data, enable multifactor authentication on accounts and devices, and regularly review their credit reports. Free weekly credit reports are available from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion through the Annual Credit Report website.

To support those impacted by identity theft or potential fraud resulting from the breach, Nessel highlighted the Michigan Identity Theft Support System (MITS). This system helps residents restore stolen identities. Steps recommended include reviewing signs of identity theft, determining what information may have been compromised, contacting financial institutions, checking credit reports with an option to freeze them if needed, and filing an Identity Theft Report with the Federal Trade Commission or a police report.

If further assistance is required after these steps are taken, Michigan residents can submit a request for help through MITS. Complaints or requests for more information can be directed to the Consumer Protection Team by mail at P.O. Box 30213 Lansing MI 48909; by phone at 517-335-7599 or toll-free at 877-765-8388; via fax at 517-241-3771; or through an online complaint form.
