Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is focusing on consumer protection during the holiday season by highlighting five key scam alerts. This initiative aims to help Michigan residents protect their finances and personal information.
The topics covered in this week’s campaign include phishing scams, where residents are advised not to click on suspicious links or open attachments from unknown sources; Michigan’s Scanner Law, which requires stores to honor the lowest advertised price; puppy scams, with a warning for consumers to see pets in person and verify breeders before making payments; AI scams, where artificial intelligence is used by fraudsters to mimic loved ones; and credit card charges, encouraging consumers to check statements regularly and report any unfamiliar activity promptly.
“During the holiday season, it’s more important than ever to stay informed about how scammers attempt to steal your hard-earned money,” Nessel said. “By staying one step ahead, you can better protect yourself and focus on what truly matters: sharing the joy and spirit of the holidays with loved ones.”
To provide ongoing guidance against scams and deceptive schemes, Attorney General Nessel has introduced a new social media account called Michigan Consumer Protection (@MIConsumerWatch). The account will offer scam alerts, consumer protection tips, educational resources, and updates from the Department of Attorney General. Residents are encouraged to follow @MIConsumerWatch on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn.
The Department of Attorney General will release weekly press updates every Monday about current scams. Daily posts will also be shared through MI Consumer Alerts social media accounts as part of this campaign.
