Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced the start of her annual holiday consumer protection campaign. The initiative, which begins on Black Friday and continues through the New Year, aims to educate Michigan residents about how to safeguard their personal information and finances during the holiday season.
The campaign will use the Attorney General Consumer Protection website’s holiday scams page and social media platforms to share information on 24 topics related to scams that often target consumers at this time of year. This year, the campaign will incorporate themes from popular holiday movies in an effort to reach new audiences and present information in a more engaging format.
“Before the holidays and the biggest spending day of the year, it’s important to be aware of scammers looking to take the joy out of the season – and take your hard-earned money or personal information,” Nessel said. “Through this campaign, residents can learn to stay vigilant and keep ahead of common scams in a fun and festive way.”
As part of the campaign launch, Nessel is providing guidance for major shopping days such as Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday. The Attorney General’s office will also issue new alerts covering a range of topics including AI scams, Facebook Marketplace scams, returns policies, porch piracy, and online shopping risks.
To further support consumers, Nessel has introduced a new social media account called Michigan Consumer Protection (@MIConsumerWatch). This account is intended as a reliable source for scam alerts, consumer protection advice, educational materials, and updates from the Department of Attorney General. Residents are encouraged to follow @MIConsumerWatch on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn.
Press releases detailing weekly scam topics will be issued every Monday throughout the campaign period. Daily updates will also be posted via MI Consumer Alerts social media accounts.
