Assistant Attorney General John L. Thurber has been recognized with the Theodore W. Swift Civility Award by the Ingham County Bar Association, according to an announcement from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The award is given to a member of the association who demonstrates civility in interactions with judges, lawyers, clients, and the public, while upholding the highest standards of the legal profession.
Attorney General Nessel stated, “For nearly three decades, John has shown professionalism, civility and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law. His work has made a lasting impact on the State of Michigan, and his career embodies the very best of public service. I congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
Thurber graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Kenyon College in 1990 and received his law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1993. He joined the State Bar of Michigan that same year. Since March 1996, Thurber has worked for the Department of Attorney General and currently serves as assistant attorney general within its Alcohol & Gambling Enforcement Division. Over his 29-year tenure at the department, he has mainly represented the Michigan Department of Corrections in federal court, participating in numerous cases throughout Michigan and arguing several times before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
